Recreation at Wonosobo : Dieng Village and Kali Salak

Dieng is one of the regions in Central Java province. Becauese of its beautiful nature and unique traditions, goverment announces Dieng as one of the tourism villages in Central Java province. Every year thousands tourists visit the village.

The word "Dieng" dirives from two word of Sankrit language. 'Di' and 'Hyang'. The word 'di' means high land or mountain while the word 'hyang' means the heaven. Combining the two word, we can get the meaning. Dieng is the high land for the home of the gods.

The firts point og interest in Dieng is the natural tourist objects. Visitors may enjaoy Tambi tea plantation at the slope of Mount Sindoro. This location is equipped with some home stays, fishing area, tennis court, park and tea gardens. Serayu river is just another natural object to challange. It is challenging for having the water sport.

Beside, tourist may also see Si Kendang crater and Si Kidang crater. Like the names, Si Kedang crater produces a unique sound of Kendang (one of the Javanese musical antelope (Kidang)).

The other point of interest about Dieng is the historica objects, especially the Hindu temples. The group of Arjuna temples are old and unique. Visitors may witness the buildings of worship in the olden time.

Last but not least, the ritual of 'Rambut Gembel' is also attractive. This ritual is a tradition in Kejajar district, about 17 km northern of Wonosobo capital regency. In this region, many children have squalid hairs (rambut gembel). According to local tale, the squalid hair is a curse to a child. To free the child from the curse, the parents must hold the ritual.

The other point of interest about Dieng anymore is Hindu temple. The Hindu temples are located in Dieng plateau, Wonosobo, Central Java. They were built in the 7^th century. The structures ever built in Java.

The real names of the temples are not known. Why ? This is beacause no authentic data is found. Local people, then, named them Javanese wayang character, mostly taken from Mahabharata epic.

The temples are clustered around three groups. Arjuna, Dwarawati and Gathotkaca  cluster. Bima temple was constructed as a separate single temple. The main temple are clustered around the Arjuna temple. The are surroundded by mountains and hills. Arjuna cluster is located in the central area of Dieng Plateau. The cluster consist of four temple.

Bima temple is the largest and tallest building in the Dieng temple compound. It is a single temple situated on a hill, and separated from the rest of Dieng temples. The shape is unique, because it is different from the other temple in Central Java in general.

Kali Salak Village

Kali Salak is a little village in Wonosobo regency, Central Java province. The area is about 150 ha with fresh air everywhere. Every morning people can still enjoy the song of birds. It is really melodious and comfortable place to live in.

The soil in the village is very fertile. All plants grow very well. That is why most people work farmers. They plant such vegetables as cabbage, potato, cejery, tomato, and many others. The agricultural business guarantees the people's life. They live prospesrously. You never see the poor people in the village. And because of the prosperity, the childres di not like to go school. They think it is enaugh to be farmers and manage the agricultural busingess.

Is there any other interesting point about the village ? Yes, of course. In the village there is an attractive art show. It is called 'lengger' dance. In the performance, beautiful dancers dance and sing songs at the same time. The men accompany the artist to dance too. The dancing runs the whole night.
